After finding the book on Ebay, I really enjoyed reading it. It gives a bit more detail than the film but not lots more and I think the film is a good representation and a more accessible medium for the information. I think in reading it I realised more how apparent Cathy and Reg's social mobility is and how easy it is to fall from wealth and a comfortable income than to gain and move up the social ladder. Throughout the book Cathy and Reg claim they are just having 'bad luck' and that 'they'll be up again soon'. The saddest thing about the book and the situation because it is all based on real events is that Reg is working, he has an accident which he loses pay for a while but apart from that he is in work. I do think these books and Loach's work has made a big impact on what I want to do in the future and is the reason why I want to work with working-class archives and literature. I would like to know if there was a way to re-release the film as I do think young people who have the same views would benefit from seeing it and as it made such a big impact when it was released I think it would do the same today. |
