Only recently did I find out that D.H Lawrence's father was a miner, I had blindly assumed that Lawrence was upper-class which is very bad on my part but I found a 1960's copy of his plays on Ebay where the first play 'A Collier's Friday Night' depicts the evening in 1909 of a miner and his family. I haven't read many plays until recently but I have really enjoyed them I think the subject of the working-class fits well with the structure. I really enjoyed the father and daughter's relationship in the play it reminded me very much of me and my dad. The images below are where I found out that Lawrence's family were miners and to my luck Larkin had written a poem on his reaction to a documentary about them.
I was again, suprised that Larkin was affected by this as he was very far on the right in his political views, I like to think it's because he couldn't be bothered to even help himself never mind poor people but he was a big Tory so it shocked me to find that he was affected by the mining explosions. I would like to explore this further as I think it has a lot to it, miners are an essential aspect to working-class history especially to northern towns. |
