Left Unity - The Relevance my Project has Today

Mock up posters of Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow with Left Unity
At the start of my project I contacted Left Unity a left political party which Ken Loach helped to fund and create for an alternative to the Labour party.
He left the party in 2015 to support Corbyn but as the party is close to him and reflects well his morals and political views I wanted it to be involved in my work.
It was important to me that I value the political messages as highly as the visual within these films and I feel this was emphasised with partnering with Left Unity.

If the pandemic rules had not been in place I would of liked to of shown the films at a library or a local community centre as another concern of mine throughout my work is that working-class people aren't valued or represented enough through typically 'highbrow' culture.

Another main concern of mine when I started the project was making sure these films were being 'reintroduced' to society that perhaps maybe the people who had watched them in the past were reminded of how influential they were at the time. Despite posting everything I've printed or drawn on social media there hasn't been much response on the work as I would of hoped.

However, putting out the posters with Left Unity managed to reach a few people on Twitter as
someone was arguing of the relevance of Ken Loach within the party. So perhaps not for the reasons I intended but I still think it's good someone is paying attention to it and what is to be expected from making work with political commentary.

I thought making the posters would be more eye-catching and a good overview of the project as without the names of the films it would be difficult to immediately see what my aim was, I took inspiration from the original posters I've been referencing throughout the project and added the type on photoshop.

Along with introducing myself to the scenes I feel working with the party has brought the intent behind the project more into now and today. Despite looking at and being concerned with the political climate of the 1960's in Britain I am still as concerned with today's I just feel it is easier to make judgement and comment on something in the past rather than the present as it changes so quickly. For instance I was a strong Labour supporter in 2019 and now I wouldn't vote for them at all, I've even stopped my membership.

The one thing I wanted make sure of in this project was that the films still felt relevant. Visually I think I have succeeded in this and politically in terms of Cathy Come Home, the homeless crisis since the start of the Pandemic has resulted in 70,000 households becoming homeless.
I am aware that homeless people do not need to be reminded of their position but as the Government hardly ever covers it in news or papers, people like me and others can visually.
