Yesterday we had a talk from Phil Wrigglesworth who has started the magazine 'Beneficial Shock' where artists and writers respond to films and credit films with more artistic recognition. Phil mentioned some work he has done inspired by Ken Loach's film Land and Freedom which is about a member of the Communist party in Liverpool wanting to fight the fascists in Spain. It was really good to hear from someone who likes Ken Loach too and shares similar political views and to see how different we both express this throughout work.
Another thing I found interesting was how Phil pays homage to certain paintings and transcribes them, he showed a cover he did for the book 'Creeping Fascism What it is and How to Fight it' where he used George Grosz Eclipse of the Sun painting from 1926 and how he had paid homage to this. I found this really helpful as I am also working from secondary sources it was interesting to see how his method works similarly. |
