Rita Sue and Bob Too - Alan Clarke 1987 I have been meaning to watch this for a while and it's quickly become one of my favourite films. Very often in working-class films young women are exploited and are seen as naive and vunerable, the character of Katie in I, Daniel Blake (Loach 2016) has to turn to sex work for money as a last resort, in this piece though sex is presented differently. Rita and Sue are in control of every sexual encounter they have which I thought was amazing to see, I thought I would find it uncomfortable to see two school girls have an affair with an older married man but it is clear they are in control and hold the power of the relationship. Rita and Sue's lives are portrayed as to be celebrated and shows the enjoyment that can still be had despite growing up poor. They take whatever opportunity they can have and run with it, they are presented as holding the ambition of young boys rather than young girls which needs to be in more films. The scenes were Sue is hit by her boyfriend shows the negative sides of being a woman but she shows him no sympathy when he tries to apologise and they both fight back. I really enjoyed it and will watch it again and think that from a working-class perspective it shows young women as strong and in control. |
