The Portico Library Books and Bindings; Art Serving Mass Production

After exploring last week the connections between elite art and art for the people along with John's suggestions of some Punch artists and looking at how the working-class were a satire in the Victorian times, I saw that the Portico library was having a talk about the production of books in the 1830's.

Throughout the early 19th century all across Europe saw a rise in population and with the reform acts starting to be put into place more and more people were wanting education. The talk was very informative and Edmund talked about the different techniques used to print and bind the books.
Edmund spoke of an illustrator called John Leighton whose book covers are above and how they were quite affordable, I thought it was interesting that William Morris would of fond these books to of lacked craftmanship as they were mass produced but compared to books today they are so beautiful and intricate.
